 FAQ

TOP 7 QUESTIONS WE HEAR FROM PATIENTS
How often should I do an eye exam?

Usually, every 2 years, if younger than 7 then every year and more frequently for contact lens users and those over 40.

Why do I need to do a test to get contact lenses?

A contact lens fits over the surface of the eye, partially blocking oxygen from getting to the eyes. The eyes need to be checked for any signs of any change that would reduce the integrity of the surface of the eye. Instructions need to be provided for the correct/safe use of lenses.

I just turned 40 and have trouble reading, what could it be?

The lens inside your eye is contained in a capsule and this capsule gets more rigid with time, this results in reduced flexibility and reduced focusing ability.

How can I correct it?

The reduced focusing ability after 40 can be corrected by using spectacles or contact lenses or both.

How long does an eye exam take?

Generally, 20 to 30 minutes, dependent on the condition and type of correction required. Contact lens consultations and visual therapy can run up to 45 min.

How long do spectacles take?

Largely dependent on the prescription and type of lenses used. On average 5 working days (less in some cases). Multifocals/progressive lenses, high prescriptions, and specialized lenses can take up to 14 working days.

What is a cataract and how can it be treated?

A cataract is the opacification of the lens in the eye, it becomes discoloured and blocks light from getting to the retina which absorbs light allowing you to see. It is caused either due to degeneration or due to trauma and needs to be referred to an ophthalmologist for surgical treatment.
